Nigeria police denies that an officer shot a newspaper vendor dead in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command denied reports that a police officer attached to President Femi Gbajabiamila fired the stray bullet that killed a newspaper seller in Abuja on Thursday, November 19.

In a statement issued by the command’s public relations officer, ASP Yusuf said the security officer who fired the shot was not a police officer.

the statement read; “The FCT Police Command wishes to unequivocally refute the allegation circulating in sections of the media that a policeman attached to the convoy of the Speaker of the House of Representatives shot a newspaper vendor in the three-armed area Thursday, November 19, 2020.

“Contrary to misleading reports, the preliminary investigation into the unfortunate incident reveals that the security assistant who shot the vendor was not a member of the Nigerian police.

“However, the police commissioner FCT CP. Bala Ciroma ordered a quiet investigation into the incident.

“While sympathizing with the family and friends of the deceased, the police commissioner wishes to assure members of the public that the command will be lucid in its investigation and that the findings will be made public.”
