Soldier sentenced to 12-years in jail after bragging to his woman that he masterminded 2018 White City bomb blast

A Zimbabwean soldier identified as Tendai Saunyama Kandima was sentenced to 12 years in prison after bragging about being the mastermind behind the White City bombing in Bulawayo in 2018.

The White City Bombing, also known as the Bulawayo Bombing, occurred on June 23, 2018, a few weeks before the July 2018 Harmonized Elections in Zimbabwe. The bomb exploded when President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputies, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and Vice President Kembo Mohadi left a Zanu PF rally at the White City Stadium.

3 people died in the attack and at least 40 others were injured.

Kandima, however, said she organized the bombing in an attempt to impress his girlfriend via Whatsapp chat. The cat eventually found his way to the military, which led to his arrest and detention at the 2nd Infantry Brigade at Kaguvi Barracks in Harare.

Zimlive reported that the soldier who was not represented by a lawyer at the general court martial was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He will, however, serve an effective six-year prison sentence after half of his conditional suspended sentence.

Zimbabwean Human Rights Lawyers (ZLHR) took over Kandima’s case and called on Harare-based lawyer Innocent Gonese to secure Kandima’s release so he could receive medical treatment emergency for heart disease.

Gonese revealed that they are going to file an appeal with the Supreme Court because the General Court Martial is the same as the High Court.
